    An evaluation of logistics policy enablers between Taiwan and the UK

    Purpose: This paper aims to empirically identify crucial international logistics policy enablers and to examine their impacts on logistics performance using survey data collected from 169 responding firms in Taiwan and 109 responding firms in the UK including logistics companies, freight forwarders, shipping companies, agencies and airline companies. Design/methodology/approach: A multiple regression analysis is used as a method to empirically validate the research model. Findings: Results indicate the five most important logistics policy enablers according to Taiwanese logistics firms are information technology system, inland transport linkage, simplifying the customs clearance procedures, ports and maritime transport and having a policy to ensure efficient service operation and multiplicity of services. In contrast, for the UK logistics firms, the five most important logistics policy enablers are telecommunications, information technology system, avoidance of unnecessary regulation, inland transport linkage and ports and maritime transport. Results also indicate that logistics policy dimensions in terms of regulation, integration, infrastructure and logistics education have a positive influence on firms’ logistics service quality and efficiency. Originality/value: Theoretical and policy implications from the research findings on logistics policy between these two countries are discussed in this paper

    Influenza vaccination of elderly: relaunch time

    Influenza can be a serious disease and constitutes a threat to the population. Every year, seasonal influenza epidemics affect about 5-15% of the world's population. Some frail categories (such as the elderly) can develop complications, request hospitalization, and may die. In order to reduce the medical, social and economic burden of influenza, vaccination is recommended by many health authorities worldwide. Italy has a national programme of influenza vaccination which targets specific categories, such as subjects with chronic conditions, pregnant women, healthcare workers and those over 65 years old. Despite this opportunity for prevention, however, vaccination coverage in Italy does not reach the minimum recommended threshold of 75%. This paper reports some interventions that can improve coverage rates of the elderly, such as "tailor-made" information campaigns, healthcare workers training and the adoption of innovative communication strategies in order to implement vaccination strategies that take into account the needs of the elderly population, the involvement of elderly people's associations in awareness-raising activities and strengthening the role of general practitioners in promoting influenza vaccination

    The role of clinical microbiologists in infectious disease management

    All infectious disease consultations directed to the clinical microbiologists at the Queen Mary Hospital in February 1995 were analysed. A total of 95 written and 111 telephone consultations were received. Fifty three percent of the written consultations involved patients with persistent fever despite multiple antimicrobial therapy. Of all written consultations, gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria, and fungi were encountered in 39%, 31%, and 19%, respectively. The majority of written consultations (55%) were from surgical units. In contrast, 65% of telephone consultations came from medical and paediatric units. This study indicated that a wide spectrum of infectious disease problems - both diagnostic and therapeutic - were encountered by clinical microbiologists. The unique combination of laboratory skill and clinical infectious disease knowledge gives the microbiologist a distinctive advantage in assisting clinicians to provide optimal care to patients suffering from infection.published_or_final_versio

    Increase in the nasopharyngeal carriage of non-vaccine serogroup 15 Streptococcus pneumoniae after introduction of children pneumococcal conjugate vaccination in Hong Kong

    This study assessed pneumococcal carriage in the early periods after routine use of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) in Hong Kong. Nasopharyngeal swabs were obtained from 1110 children (<5 years) admitted with acute illness during September 2010–August 2013. Pneumococcal carriage rate was 13.5% in unvaccinated children, 14.1% in children who had ≥1 PCV dose and 15.3% in children who had ≥3 PCV doses. Nonv-PCV13 serotypes comprised 56.4% of all isolates. The most common serogroup/types were 15 (15A, 5.1%; 15B, 10.3%; 15C, 9.6%; 15F, 0.6%), 19F (17.9%), 6A (7.1%) and 6C (7.1%). Carriage of serogroup 15 was more common among vaccinated children (4.1% versus 0.6%, P = 0.033). Molecular typing revealed that expansion of several clones (clonal complex, CC63, CC199, CC1262, CC3397) was responsible for the increase in serogroup 15. Almost all CC63 and CC3397 isolates were nonsusceptible to both penicillin and erythromycin. The finding highlights the emergence of serogroup 15 following PCV13 use.postprin
